How to use your phone as a webcam

The camera in your laptop is the worst camera you own. The one in your pocket is probably the best. Closing that gap costs nothing, takes about ten minutes to set up the first time, and does more for how you look on camera than any amount of lighting gear.

Here is how to do it properly, including the part most guides skip: the right answer depends entirely on what you are pointing the camera at.

Why the phone wins, concretely

It is not marketing. The hardware is genuinely in a different class.

A typical laptop webcam uses a sensor around 1/6 of an inch with a fixed f/2.0 lens and very little processing behind it. A recent phone’s main camera uses a sensor several times larger, a faster lens, and a processing pipeline that has had billions of dollars of engineering poured into making faces look good in bad light.

Sensor size is the part that matters most and the part you cannot fix with software. A larger sensor gathers more light per pixel, which means less noise in a dim room, better colour, and that shallow depth of field that separates you from the wall behind you without any software trickery.

The practical difference: in a well lit room, a good webcam and a phone both look fine. At 7pm with one lamp on, the webcam turns into mush and the phone still looks like a person.

First decide what it is for

This is the fork in the road, and it determines which tools can help you.

If you need the phone to appear in a video call, in Zoom, Google Meet, Teams or Slack, the phone has to present itself to your operating system as though it were a normal webcam. That requires software with a virtual camera driver.

If you are recording or live streaming, you do not need a virtual camera at all. You need a studio app that can take the phone in as a video source directly, alongside your screen and your other cameras.

These are different problems, and mixing them up is why people end up installing three things that do not do what they wanted.

For video calls

You need something that installs a driver on your computer. The main options:

  • Continuity Camera is built into macOS and iOS and costs nothing. If you are in the Apple ecosystem on both ends, start here. It appears as a camera in every app automatically, and it is very good.
  • Camo and EpocCam work across Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. Both have free tiers with limitations and paid tiers with the good stuff. Camo in particular gives you real manual control over the phone’s lens and exposure.
  • DroidCam is the long-standing Android option, and it is cheap.

All of them work by installing a virtual camera on your machine and streaming the phone’s video into it. Pick based on your platform combination and whether you want manual camera control.

Watercourse cannot help you here. A virtual camera exists in the codebase but is not enabled in builds, so it will not put your phone into Zoom. Better to say so than to waste your afternoon.

For recording and streaming

Here the virtual camera is an unnecessary detour. You are not trying to fool Zoom into seeing a webcam. You are building a scene, and the phone is one source in it.

In Watercourse this is a QR code. Open the camera panel, choose “Use your phone as a camera”, and scan the code with the phone on the same wifi. The phone becomes another camera in the scene, and you can tile it in the gallery layout or cut to it with a key press.

Three things are worth knowing about how it works:

  • There is nothing to install on the phone. The app serves a page itself and the phone opens it in its browser. No account, no app store, no sign-in on a device that is not yours.
  • Nothing leaves your network. The video goes from the phone to your computer over local wifi. It does not travel to a server and back.
  • You will see a certificate warning the first time. Browsers only allow camera access on secure pages, and the page is being served by your computer rather than by a website with a public certificate. Tap through it once per phone and you will not see it again. This is expected, not a sign that something is broken.

The honest limitation: this needs the phone and the computer on the same wifi. It is not a way to bring in a remote guest who is holding a phone in another city. That is a different feature.

Getting the shot right

Having a better sensor pointed at you badly is not an improvement. These are the things that actually decide whether it looks good.

Use the main lens, not the ultrawide

Phones expose several lenses, and software often defaults to the ultrawide. It is the weakest sensor of the set and its wide field of view distorts faces badly at conversational distance, pushing your nose forward and pulling your ears back.

Use the main lens. If the app gives you a choice, take it. If you can, use the 2x telephoto instead, which flatters faces more than any other lens on the phone.

Get the distance right

The single most common mistake is putting the phone too close. Faces look wrong at short distances because of perspective, not because of the camera.

Sit around an arm and a half away, roughly a metre, and frame yourself from mid-chest up. If that leaves you too small in frame, zoom slightly rather than moving the phone closer.

Mount it properly and horizontally

Leaning it against a stack of books works until it does not, usually mid-take. A cheap phone tripod or a clamp that grips your monitor costs very little and removes an entire category of problem.

Mount it horizontally unless you are deliberately shooting a vertical format. Put the lens at roughly eye level. A camera below eye level is the least flattering angle there is, and a camera above it makes you look like you are being interviewed by a security system.

Light your face, not the room

The phone’s advantage in low light is real but it is not magic. A window in front of you, or any soft light source in front of you rather than behind, will do more than any setting.

Never sit with a bright window behind you. The camera exposes for the bright background and turns you into a silhouette. If you cannot move, close the blinds and put a lamp in front of you.

Turn off the beauty and portrait modes

Portrait mode blurs backgrounds with software that was designed for still photos. On video it produces flickering edges around hair and glasses that draws the eye immediately. If you want a blurred background, use the studio’s own background replacement, which is designed to run continuously on moving video.

Beauty filters, likewise. They look fine in a still frame and uncanny in motion.

Deal with heat and battery

A phone running its camera continuously gets hot and drains fast, and both get worse if it is also charging. For anything over about twenty minutes:

  • Plug it in, but take the case off so it can shed heat.
  • Turn the screen brightness right down, since the display is a large part of the power draw.
  • Turn on do not disturb, so a notification does not appear mid-take.
  • Set the screen to never auto-lock, or the camera stops when it sleeps.

If the phone throttles from heat, video quality drops before anything tells you. On a long session, a cheap desk fan pointed at it is not an unreasonable thing to own.

Keep it on 5GHz wifi

Local video over wifi is fine on a decent network and unreliable on a congested 2.4GHz band shared with everything else in the building. Put both the phone and the computer on the 5GHz network. If your router presents both bands under one name, it is worth splitting them just for this.

A quick checklist

Before a real session:

  1. Phone and computer on the same 5GHz wifi.
  2. Phone mounted, horizontal, at eye level, about a metre away.
  3. Main or telephoto lens, not ultrawide.
  4. Light in front of you, nothing bright behind you.
  5. Portrait mode and beauty filters off.
  6. Plugged in, case off, do not disturb on, auto-lock off.
  7. Record thirty seconds and actually watch it back before you need it.

That last one catches more problems than the other six combined.

Is it worth the trouble?

If you are on a call, and your laptop is in front of a window, honestly the built-in camera is fine. The setup cost is not worth it for a stand-up.

If you are recording something people will watch later, or streaming to an audience, it is one of the highest return changes available to you. It is free, it takes ten minutes, and it moves you from looking like a video call to looking like a production. Compared to buying a camera, which is the usual alternative, it is not close.
